I find hard to believe that Yamaha left available such an easy way to make two of their products redundant. On the other hand I also doubt that there is any hardware difference among the three amps (I didn't really check) so I am quite sure that an expert firmware hack could make all the sounds available in a single amp.
More difficult hacks were made on much more sophisticated equipment, just check out some of the main photo and video equipment forums. That said, even if all the sounds were available in a single amp (and other modelling amps offer such a wide range of presets), I bet that most of us will keep using not more than two or three of them. Click to expand.Hi! I dont have a 10C so I cant compare.
This is what I did. Go to yamaha and download preset library for the 10C. With my 10 plugged into my PC I opened up the library editor and loaded the THR10C.YDL. Now you have the 10C presets loaded and can use them right away.
Same for the 10X. Since you have both yourself it take about one minute to try it. Heres the link to the yamaha presets. 10C: 10X: I'm not trying to bull. anyone, since you have both you could do us all a favor and test if it really sounds the same, because it will work. If it works but sounds wrong, I'll be wrong but not a bull.ter.
If I'm right, you could sell one of them. I dont have a 10C so I cant compare. This is what I did. Go to yamaha and download preset library for the 10C. Just ran across this thread. 2 cents: While the library can be downloaded, opened in the editor, and the patches play on an original THR10, I don't think they sound the same as they would on the hardware they are designed for.
The patches in the libraries are just selecting 'an' amp model and then setting the values of all the adjustable parameters (equalization, compressor, effect, etc.). On the THR10 the amp models are CLEAN, CRUNCH, LEAD, BRIT HI, MODERN, BASS, ACO, and FLAT. I don't know what they are the other THRs, but there are some common, some not. The deep parameters that make each amp MODEL sound different then the others are not adjustable. So although I may load 'Chicken Single Coil' from the THR10C into my THR10, it is just selecting the 'CRUNCH' amp model and then applying all of the adjustable parameters. In the real THR10C, the second amp model is something else, 'Class A' and I am pretty sure even with all other settings being equal the THR10C 'Class A' sounds very different from my THR10 'CRUNCH'.
I could be wrong, but that is my impression. The Yamaha Magic Stomp spoiled us.
In that case the original (version 1.2), bass, and acoustic models were all identical hardware, just different paint jobs and different default patches. You could program any MS with a patch from any other and it would be correct.
(So never pay the premium for the Acoustic MS on eBay, just get the standard and you still have everything available.) -bh.

I have seen several people with Yamaha THR10 confirming presets for C and X model work on their vanilla THR10 and I wonder if that still work with firmware version 1.0.4 and 2.0 on the THR10? People confirming the C/X presets worked was using firmware version 1.0.0 on their amp.
I have not seen anyone with vanilla THR10 say it does not work, only people with the THR10C model say it does not work. Can you guys with this amp shed some light on this? And by the way is there any hardware difference on model C and X compared to vanilla THR10?
Hejsan mungiga, Welcome to the Yamaha Forums. I have both the THR-10 (vanilla) upgraded to the version 2.0 firmware, and a THR-10C (standard, no firmware upgrades so far) In fact, so far, there's no firmware available for the THR-10C, THR-10X or THR-5A Both THR's can use the same computer and software, ONE at a time, sharing the same software, but NOT the libraries. A patch for my THR-10, WILL NOT work on my THR-10C and vise versa. There might be some computer wizzards out there that can run both amps simultaneously on the same computer, and share patches on different THR models, but so far I haven't found the way or the need.
I don't know for sure if all THR (5 and 10) amps have EXAXTLY the same hardware inside, but I would not risk trying to install THR-10 firmware to my THR-10C. There's no going back since the firmware/upgrades are only for the (vanilla) THR amps. Best Regards Peter.
Thanks for the reply and the welcoming to the forums! I wonder, if I make my own presets, can I make presets that sounds the same on Vanlilla and C version? The thing is, I want THR10 vanilla because it looks better and I want the diversity of the original presets, but I also want some of the presets with the nice sounds from the C version.
I wonder if it's possible to mimic all those sounds on the normal THR10 with home/custom made presets? My plan is to then buy THR10 and make my own presets to make it have some of the THR10C sounds. Or is the features to make custom presets different from each models and perhaps limited to fit that model? The 'vanilla' THR-10 amp is the most versatile, the C and X models are more 'specialist'.
If you have the 'vanilla' amp, you can almost make the same sounds. THR patches on Yamaha Forums: I have made custom sounds for both 'vanilla' and 'C' amps and my favorites like ACDC or Status quo is in both sound libraries. The patches may differ slightly, but close enough to enjoy playing on either amp. Regards Peter. Jeff-carolina wrote:Hi Peter, Good stuff, Thank-You for the links. I see quite a few patches I want to try out for the THR-10, Hank Marvin is one of them, I've always liked his version of Apache.
Jeff The THR amp itself, is only part of the magic, your guitar, and mainly the pickups makes the other half. Some of the patches may sound muddy if your pickups are too 'hot'. Either roll back a bit on the volume, or alter the patch a bit with less gain. When using single coil pickups, some patches may need more gain to get the right growl, but it's doable. A few days ago, I bought a second hand THR-10x. Until then, I thought I had all my sounds covered, including the metal sounds, from my THR-10 and THR-10c The THR-10X really delivers buzzsaw metal like no other, and even some subtle overdrive on the 'clean' channel.
Happy I got it. Regards Peter. IF you didn't 'upgrade' the firmware to your original THR-10 V.1, you may be able to use patches from THR-10c and THR-10x Read about it here: FOR SURE, once upgraded, your THR-10 V.2 can not use patches from '10C' and '10X' models, and the '10C' and '10X' models can only use patches made specifically for each model. Only THR-10 (V.1) owners who didn't make the v.2 firmware upgrade have a chance of testing if other patches can be used.
The sounds will however NOT be correct since the modeled amp types are different in the 3 THR models. Regards Peter.
Yamaha Thr10c Presets
As a very enthused proponent of the Yamaha THR10 series of amps, I have been asked about some of my settings. I tend not to use any of the overdrive models as they are just too gainy for my taste. But I have developed some drive settings that I absolutely love the tone of. I like a cleaner tone and also a mild overdrive tone, with plenty of compression dialed in.
You might try these to see how you like them. So, here are my three favorite settings with the THR10. Note that they all begin with the model selector on the BASS amp setting. You need to use the editor app to access some of these controls.

Then save them to the presets on the top of the amp for ready access. With these settings, my guitar's volume and tone pots are usually dimed. Don't use Gain or Master to control loudness of the speakers. Use the 'Guitar' volume control, on the far right of the amp, to adjust the loudness level of the amp in the room. If you have some particular favorite settings on your THR, please share them in this thread.
I should be sharing some, not sure is settings for THR10C would work for you guys but you can try. Layarkaca21 tamiya lets and go the movie. I was on the fence on selling the amp, mostly for the issues I have with the eq.

For instance, if you go on any setting from 75% to a 100, the change is not a subtle one, I find myself turning the treble at less than 50%, my point is, the eq does not feel natural to me, the sounds can be good but you need to work with it. The editor keeps me interested in working with it. So, here is were this amp gets really useful for me, I do all my work on Cubase, very easy to use BTW, if you only have one interface as an i/o being the Yamaha, it is even easier. All of my loops are done with EZdrummer, so at the wee hours I can use the headphone out from the Yamaha to monitor everything that is going on Cubase, drums, keys, bass and guitar, this is beyond useful, and for that reason alone I am going to keep it, for now.
The THR Editor is a software application that lets you freely edit settings and create patch files on a computer screen for Yamaha’s THR10, THR5, THR10C, THR10X or THR5A Guitar Amplifier. In addition to the main controls on the THR, it provides settings for the compressor, noise gate, and speaker cabinet for more precise sound shaping. Listening to the actual sound change as you turn the knobs on the screen lets you create sound intuitively.
You can save the patch files you create on your computer and create libraries of sounds.
